Exploring Watercolors

Beginners learn about color mixing and theory, paper and brushes, and washes.  Participants bring 5 of their own photographs for ideas.  For experienced students, the instructor is there t help with artistic decisions and to introduce new ideas.  Bring your own supplies or $50 for a set. 6 (2 hour) classes

This course is designed to study watercolors and ink washes.  Learn to carefully observe light and composition in order to add volume and liveliness to the drawing and then paint it.  Participants work from real objects in the first class and their own photos in the second class.  Brying your materials and 5 photographs.  6 (2 hour) classes.

Students learn the Old Masters technique of oil painting and glazing.  Each person will choose a masters oil painting to use as a guide but will use their own photograph to produce their own painting.  Bring your own paints if you have them or use our studio pants, an 18 x 24 canvas or board, and 5 photos  6 (2 hour) classes.

Students learn to draw and sculpt fantasy places and characters that have depth and perspective.  Students will build scenes and characters that include your ideas of space ships, buildings, deep caves, under water, boulder landscapes, etc.  Students will work on illustration board and use clay to build their ideas.  This kind of technical drawing/sculpture is a 'must' for students who draw comics or fantasy places and charactersies.  6 (1 1/2 hour) classes

The sketchbook is a vital, creative and dynamic way to record and explore your life/world, your observations and reactions, and your daily personal journey.  Students start off using different drawing instrucments, transfer techniques, papers, watercolors, acrylics, collage and markers.  Patience offers insight and creative avenues that will open any artist to develop a way to keep cretive thought and inspiration flowing. 6 (2 hour) classes.

Learn a variety of printmaking techniques in each workshop.  Each technique offers a different artistic process, papers, inks, and methods.  Hand-printing produces beautiful results with each medium....and, with printing, you will be making multiple prints of the same image.  Students start off with sketches and transfer their images onto the plates or blocks.  2 (2 1/2 hour) classes.

9-18 12:30pm - 2pm The Art of the Whole Tree
Session 1:  Skeleton and Growth Patterns of Trees - This class is a macro study of tree structure, shape, style of growth and skeleton.  Through observational sketching from photographs of trees, students will draw specimen studies of how to identify trees in the winter:  Young and old, defining the shape, growth, patterns of the trunk and branches, and terminology.  The drawing will incorporate different techniques in Charcoal, colored pencil and graphite.  This includes design, texture, color and shape of chestnut burs, acorns, maple seeds, Osage Orange, and other VA natives.  Different art techniques such as sketching, watercolors, and rubbings will be used as a way of formally recording fruits, seeds and bark.

Session 2:  Tree Flowers in Late Winter
Students will draw from specimens of tree flowers in the late winter and early spring.  Mr. Doug will cover information about native and non-native Virginia trees that grow in our area.  As the season progresses, students will learn how to look for and find out about the earliest to the latest trees as they blossom.  Did youknow that some trees bloom in the winter?

Session 3:  Spring Tree Leafing
As the trees bud out their foliage, students will observe their patterns, colors, and shapes.  During this session, students will learn how to incorporate trees into a landscape to make the trees look believable.  Students will work in graphite, watercolors, colored pencils, and charcoal with different techniques.  The final project will be a landscape drawing/painting.

Session 1:  During this six week class, students will learn basic body anatomy and structure.  Students will learn drawing techniques such as shading and proportions using plaster figures as models.  From there they will use mirrors and photographs of themselves to draw their own body.  The final project will be a whole body self-portrait done in graphite pencil and/or charcoal.
